Un corset pour le PGM - HSF 12 Shape and Support

On est en juillet hein ? Parce que clairement, ce post aurait du paraître en juillet pour répondre au douzième challenge du Historical Sew Fortnightly : "Shape and support" (Forme et soutien). Et vu que je viens de le finir et que mon plan pour le HSF indique que c'est l'entrée du challenge numéro douze, on est en juillet. Un juillet un peu pluvieux, soit.

We're in July, right ? Cause this was my entry for challenge #12 of the HSF, I have it in writing in my big cunning HSF plan, and I just finished it. So it must be July. A very rainy July it is.

J'avais besoin d'un nouveau corset - mon précédent part en lambeaux. Et je voulais quelque chose qui ressemble un peu plus à mes inspirations pour les dessous du Projet Grosses Manches. J'ai eu la chance de pouvoir examiner de très près un corset ancien dans la collection de Heileen qui a eu la gentillesse de me donner l'autorisation d'en poster les photos - j'ai relevé le patron puis l'ai adapté à ma morphologie pas vraiment identique.

Pas beaucoup de recherches dans mes magazines pour ce projet - j'avais un modèle j'ai essayé de m'y coller.

I needed a new corset - my old victorian is falling to shreds. And I wanted something that was closer to the inspiration I gathered for undies for my 1890's project. I was lucky enough to be ble to look closely at an extant corset from Heileen's collection, who has been kind enough to let me post pictures of it, thanks again ! - I patterned it and adapted this to my err... sliiightly different shape.

So there wasn't really much looking into old magazines and books for this one, just try to replicate one extant piece.

Les photos ne sont pas super, mais je ne sais pas quand j'aurai le temps de faire un photoshoot correct avec le corset un peu assoupli, donc pour aujourd'hui ce sera selfies avec le télphone, et de meilleures photos avec tous les dessous vont venir dès que j'aurai attrapé ma photographe attitré et sa chambre à coucher histo-compatible.

Apologies for the rather lousy pictures - the corset is still in the process of being broken in, and I don't know when I'll be able to stage a proper photoshoot - I need my photographer buddy and her period-looking bedroom to take pictures of the full underwear kit. So for today we'll stay with mirror selfies.

Le Challenge - The Challenge: #12 Forme et soutien - Shape and Support

Fabric - Tissu :

Yellow-black acetate taffetas for the outer tshell (that reads as a dark green) and white cotton twill for the inside. From stash.

Taffetas acetate changeant jaune et noir (qui donne du vert au final !) et sergé de coton blanc pour l'intérieur. Du stash.

Pattern - Patron :

Taken from the extant corset on the right, that looks very close to some period ones, and adapted to my shape by trial and error. The original corset is two layers of coton twill, but I forgot to note how the seams where assemblet, do I just winged it. I adapted the casings for my larger boning, too.

Pris sur le corset ancien à droite, qui ressemble pas mal à certains des années 1890, et adapté à mes formes. L'original est fait en deux épaisseurs de coutil de coton, malehrueusement j'ai oublié de noté (ou perdu les notes) comment étaient assemblées les coutures, donc j'ai un peu imprivisé. J'ai du aussi adapter au niveau des casiers à baleines, mes baleines étant plus larges que celles d'origine.

Year Année : aiming at mid-1890's, it could probably work for the end of the 1880's too - milieu des années 1890, sans doute aussi bon pour la fin des années 1880.

Notions - Mercerie : 

I used zip ties for most bones, except the two closest to the center front, where I used spiral steel as the zip ties I can find here were too short. My usual preference goes to german plastic boning but I didn't have any handy so I went with what was the closest approximation from my stash. A standard straight busk - the original was curved but I don't trust myself to try something like that, fear of breakage - yeah, breakage is attested in the original but it kinda defeats the purpose of making a corset ! ;)
The front is corded with some round laces I had at hand - much larger than the original material. The flossing is done with some thick embroidery thread I inherited from my grandma. The only things I bought for this are the coton laces and tips (which were not yet on on the pictures), the busk and the grommets came with the new grommet press (best birthday present, evah !). Stash busting project ! The coton twill stay tape I had in stash as well.

Comme baleines j’ai utilisé principalement des colsons (colliers de serrage, rayon bricolage), parce que ça se coupe facilement et que ça prend un peu la forme du corps avec el port - en général je préfère les baleines plastiques (pas la rigilène, hein !) mais j'ai fait avec ce que j'avais en stock autant que possible. Pour les deux baleines les plus sur le devant de chaque côté, j'ai pris des baleines spirales en acier, les colsons étant trop courts. Mais les baleines métalliques, faut sortir la Dremel, et surtout la RE-RANGER, et ça, c'est hyper dissuasif.
Les cordés sont faits avec de la queue de rat (rose !) qui me restait en stock, le fil pour les abeilles était hérité de ma grand-mère, le snouveaux achats pour le corset se sont limités au busc et au cordon de coton pour le laçage avec ses embouts métalliques (pas encore en place sur la photo). Les œillets sont arrivés avec ma nouvelle presse à œillets (meilleur cadeau d'anniversaire de l'univers !). Le ruban de sergé pour l'intérieur de la taille je l'avais aussi en stock.

How historically accurate is it? - C'est histo comment ?

Materials : hell no ! except for the cotton twil that might be okay-ish (but is definitely coarser than the original).
For the construction I followed Volute's sandwich method, I have no idea how accurate it is, if at all, but it allowed me a good control over the turn of cloth and gave ma a wrinkle-free corset.

The shape seems okay.
The flossing is a mix of things I saw on period examples and reproduced (though a good deal of them are slanted the wrong way, as I noticed afterwards) or plain improvisation. I added the elmbroidery below the bust on a whim, 'cause I wanted to.

Les matériaux : pas du tout, sauf peut-être le sergé de coton, mais quand même il est beaucoup plus grossier que celui de l'original.
Les abeilles sont en partie reproduites d'après des modèles d'époque (pas forcément orientées dans le bon sens, comme je m'en suis entre-temps aperçue) et de choses improvisées. Les broderies sous la poitrine sont complètement improvisées parce que pouf làlà, j'avais envie.

My archive tells me I started the first mock-up almost a month ago.

D'après mes notes, j'ai commencé la première toile il y a un mois.

I'm totally skipping the cost thing, as I've had the fabrics in stash for way to many years to remember how much they cost. I'm wearing the corset right as I type this post to break it in. I must say, I do not entirely like it. I'm pleased it is pretty, but the fit is not the best, and I will definitly work on it in a next edition. I love the shape of the bust, and the gussets int he back, but the lwer front is too wide and the upper sides and back could use some more ease.

Je passe pour le coût, j'avais les tissus en stockes depuis tellement d'années que je suis bien incapable de me rappeler combien je les avais payés.

Je le porte alors que je tape ces lignes pour le mettre un peu plus à mes formes. Je dirais que je suis plutôt satisfaite de l'aspect esthétique. Pour la coupe, j'ai plus de réserves, je sais où faire les modifications pour le suivant... J'aime la forme du buste (enfin un corset qui ne m'écrase pas la poitrine !) et les goussets en bas du dos,mais le devant est un peu trop grand devant, et par contre les côtés et le dos en haut sont un peu justes.

Je vais peut-être encore rajouter une petite dentelle en haut, et bien sûr le crochet devant pour tenir pantalon et jupons.

I still need to add maybe a small lace at the top, and a hook for petticoats.

Now comes the fun part : this corset is a serious survivor. The original has been well worn, the busk is broken, nearly all bones have been taken out, it shows rust and tears, and the line were the ties were brought back to the front is imprinted in the fabric. I took pictures of this years ago, transferred them to my laptop and didn't get to make the corset right away. In September I took the laptop out just to upload the picutres to FlickR, besaue the old thing was giving up the soul and was barely useable. I  miraculously managed to upload the pictures, and left the laptop ont he table for the first time in MONTHS. That *exact same night* some idiots broke into our home and stole, among a few other things, said laptop. They got an overheating old thing protected by password and running an old Debian and I got my corset pictures, hah !

Et pour la petite histoire rigolote : j'avais pris le patron et les photos du corset il y a un truc genre quatre ans, et les photos étaient restées sur mon ordinateur portable. Puis l'ordinateur en question a vieilli et a fini par être pour ainsi dire inutilisable. Je l'ai exceptionnellement ressorti pour sauvegarder les images en ligne (miraculeusement, ça a marché !), et l'ordinateur est resté sur la table... moins de douze heures. Nous nous sommes fait cambrioler pendant la nuit, et l'ordinateur était parti le lendemain matin. Un vieil ordi qui surchauffe en 5 minutes montre en main, protégé par mot de passe et tournant sous une version pas à jour de Debian. Mais moi j'ai mes photos de corset, ouf !
